Introducing Annika Widmark Sjöstedt – Energy Market Expert at Baltic Cable

With more than twenty-five years of experience, Annika has explored nearly every corner of the energy sector. She has held a wide range of strategic and public affairs roles across both private and public energy companies, working within the fields of electricity and district heating, and dealing with a broad spectrum of energy sources: from various forms of bioenergy and wind to hydro, gas and nuclear. When Annika joined Baltic Cable in 2024 as Energy Market Expert, she expanded her expertise into the area of electricity transmission – leaving hydrogen as a remaining area yet to be tackled.

We asked Annika a few questions for you to get to know her better:

Can you explain your role as Energy Market Expert at Baltic Cable?
“As part of the regulatory team, my focus is on public affairs. My days are filled with external contacts and meetings with industry organisations, public authorities, Governments’ ministries and agencies and other stakeholders. My role is to create knowledge and understanding of interconnector TSOs like Baltic Cable, and to clearly demonstrate why we are essential for Europe’s energy market integration and clean energy transition. Since our industry constantly evolves through new policies, directives, and regulations, I also ensure that Baltic Cable is an active participant in the regulatory developments that shape our future.”

What inspired you to pursue a career in the energy industry?
“After the deregulation of the energy market in the 1990s, there was a growing need for people who understood market dynamics. Having studied economics and finance, I chose to pursue that path, especially since I have always had a passion for sustainability and renewable energy – both of which are important pillars of the energy industry. It has been a privilege to work with these topics throughout my career.”

What projects are you working on right now?
”We are monitoring developments and advocating for our positions across several regulatory processes and future legislative acts under development, both in Sweden, Germany and on EU level. High on the agenda is the EU Grids Package, the upcoming Clean Energy Investment Strategy, and the new energy act in Sweden. At the same time, we a working on clarifying our position as a facilitator of the energy transition, ensuring a sustainable, secure and competitive Europe”

What do you enjoy most about your work at Baltic Cable?
“Baltic Cable is an enabler of Europe’s energy transition, and that is what motivates me – knowing that we help integrate renewable energy and enable it to flow where it is needed most. This is a precondition for making Europe competitive and secure”

What do you like to do outside of work?
“I enjoy spending time with family and friends, and when I do not have the chance to travel, you will often find me at the gym or the stables. I have always been an animal lover and think that horses and nature is a perfect combination.”
