With over 25 years of experience within the energy sector, Kaj has worked at governmental authorities and agencies and also as a consultant, with a niche in electricity market design and regulation. Now, he celebrates one year at Baltic Cable as Electricity Market Expert. With knowledge of both the Swedish and the European electricity market, Kaj’s task is to clarify Baltic Cable’s place in the continental energy puzzle.
We asked Kaj a few questions for you to get to know him better:
Can you explain your role as Electricity Markert Expert at Baltic Cable?
“As part of the Regulatory Team, no day is like the other. In short, my task is to stay on top of how regulations and market developments may impact Baltic Cable and what we need to comply with, today and tomorrow. Together with my colleagues, we cover many different aspects and try to create a holistic understanding of everything that is going on.”
What projects are you working on right now?
“Some of the more recurring projects are for instance our common work with the other Transmission System Operators (TSOs) in the Hansa CCR, a forum where a lot of our operations are coordinated in terms of providing our capacity to the market. I also participate as the Baltic Cable representative in the Market Coupling Steering Committee, where a lot of the joint work of TSOs and power exchanges from all over Europe is structured and governed. You could describe it as the backbone that makes all the different parts of the European electricity market coupling work together, hour by hour and day by day.”
What do you enjoy most about your work at Baltic Cable?
“I really enjoy that we are a small company, but still active and contributing in forums that have a European perspective and impact – a piece in a much larger puzzle. Baltic Cable has an important part to play and constantly need to figure out how to do that together with all the others. It requires a lot of communication, discussion and understanding, explaining and listening – and some creativity. It can be challenging, but it also provides you with new insights and perspectives.”
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
“A good friend of mine once told me to: Pay attention to your dreams. I think those are wise words that can apply to career choices, but also to other areas of life.”
What do you like to do outside of work?
“Finding out what to do is rarely a challenge. When I’m at home I like to spend time with my family and friends, play golf and exercise in various ways. Cooking has also turned out to be one of my favourite chores. During my now regular visits in Malmö, I try to have some time off to just go for a walk, visit the beach or have an amazing cup of coffee. If nothing else, I never mind having a break to listen to some good music.”
