Baltic Cable plays a small yet important role in connecting the European electricity system. For the past 30 years, the company has been providing capacity through its interconnector cable between Sweden and Germany. The company is now entering its next phase.
In March 2025, Baltic Cable, in partnership with Equitix, announced its first-ever investment outside of Sweden/Germany in acquiring Greenlink, a subsea electricity interconnector linking Ireland to Great Britain, further integrating Ireland with the wider European energy transmission network.
Well in line with EU policy
Baltic Cable has aligned its operations and strategy with the EU’s objectives for the European energy grid, supporting Europe’s goals for the clean transition and energy security, and continues to do so through the Greenlink investment.
“We invest for the benefit of industries and consumers, and for a more resilient and competitive Europe, powered by clean energy”, says Kajsa Hedberg, Managing Director of Baltic Cable.
Yet again highlighted, now in the EU’s newly adopted Affordable Energy Action Plan, interconnectors are of great strategic importance for the European electricity market. For Ireland, the added interconnector capacity will strengthen the energy security of supply while supporting greater integration of renewable energy.
Considering the growing focus on European energy security, market integration, and geopolitical uncertainty, Baltic Cable’s Managing Director underlines that a resilient and interconnected energy network is more essential than ever.
“With the Greenlink investment, Baltic Cable provides additional interconnector capacity in Europe”, says Kajsa Hedberg.
A few more steps
This investment reinforces and aligns with Baltic Cable’s broader mission to strengthening Europe’s integrated energy market. Greenlink enables renewable energy integration, enhances grid flexibility, and strengthens energy security.
Fredrik Öhrneman, Commercial Director of Baltic Cable emphasize that great achievements have been made in bringing the Greenlink project close to finalization, and the interconnector will be inaugurated on 16 April.
“We want to explore how our two assets can benefit from each other and ensure that the two interconnectors in our portfolio continue to strengthen and advance the development of the European energy market”, says Fredrik Öhrneman, Commercial Director of Baltic Cable.
This is just the beginning
Based on the past three decades of experience as an interconnector operator, Baltic Cable looks forward to continuing operating and investing in the European energy system. The investment in Greenlink is Baltic Cables’s first external investment.
“We may be a small company, but our responsibility is significant. The integration and stabilisation of the European energy market is vital, and we are determined to play an even bigger role in the future”, says Fredrik Öhrneman, Commercial Director of Baltic Cable.
