Before joining Baltic Cable in 2019, Samantha – known as Sam – gained extensive experience in finance and accounting. She has worked across various industries, including shipping, the municipal sector, construction, manufacturing, and energy. It’s not the industry itself, though some are more interesting than others, but rather the nature of finance and accounting that makes Sam tick.
What do you do as a Senior Accountant at Baltic Cable?
“On yearly basis I work with the annual and quarterly reports, but my work consists of very much day to day activities: checking the accounting, approving and checking invoices, taxes and reporting. I also compile and check important data such as price differences, restrictions, efficiency and congestion income of our cable, and make sure that the invoices that come in matches our data and that nothing is missing.”
What projects are you working on right now?
“I continuously work with improvements to help streamline the accounting processes. We also have had optimization processes concerning data collection, like implementing Microsoft’s Azure data base solution for data processing and visualization. I have also done some financial modelling education in Excel. It gives me valuable insights for my day-to-day work. On Friday nights I participate in an Excel-group on discord where we train for the Excel and Financial Modelling World Cup.”
What do you enjoy most about working at Baltic Cable?
“I like the people I work with and there is always a surprise around the corner! This is not a stagnating business. I also enjoy being able to use and evolve my knowledge of accounting, it’s a big plus. But I think it’s especially the people I work with, there has not been a huge turnover here of employees. People come and they do not leave – and that says a lot”
What is the best career advice you ever received?
“Formal Education is not everything, as long as you are willing to learn”
What is your favourite thing to do on a day off?
“I love to read, especially fantasy and sci-fi! I also enjoy gaming like role play computer games, or cosy and relaxing clicky-games, anything to numb the mind after a busy day of work. Me and my husband met through gaming, and today both of us and our daughter share this interest, although she mostly plays Roblox like so many other children today!”
