With a master’s degree in industrial engineering and management from Lund University, Arvid began his career as a Quantitative Analyst at one of Europe’s largest energy companies. His experience includes estimations of price forward curves in the Nordics as well as portfolio risk assessments. In October 2024, he joined the commercial team at Baltic Cable.
What do you do as a Business and Investment Analyst at Baltic Cable?
“Every day looks different, but my main focus is on our commercial operations as an interconnector TSO. That includes maintaining and developing processes and IT solutions for offering capacity, collecting congestion rent, and trading to minimize imbalances. I also participate in regional and EU collaborations to improve cross-border electricity trading and ensure efficient market operations. Market surveillance and analysis are also essential to help us make the right decisions, and I work with data management and modeling to support the business with data-driven insights.”
What inspired you to pursue a career in the energy industry?
“I never planned for it, but I remember finding a course in financial statistics really interesting, and that sparked my curiosity. The assignment was to model the risk of fluctuations in electricity prices. Compared to the financial stock market, the electricity market has another layer of complexity, with physical things like weather that controls the system, and I think it becomes an interesting mix.”
What projects are you working on right now?
“My most interesting project is Baltic Cable entering into Single Intraday Coupling. Now, we offer our capacity on the day-ahead market. Through the intraday market, traders anywhere in Europe will also be able to use our cable capacity continuously, up until shortly before physical delivery. But it’s a lot of work since we must adapt all our commercial processes. Right now, we are in a pre-study phase with the ambition to go live in the coming years”
What do you enjoy most about your work at Baltic Cable?
“It is a super interesting industry, and this is the most interesting company. What we do has such an effect on the whole European energy market. Even though we are very few and a small company, there is a lot of competence, and we do have an impact.”
What’s your favorite things to do outside of work?
“I mean, I am always up for a nice dinner, a glass of wine and a good movie. But I also love to ski. When I was young, I used to compete in alpine skiing, and during my studies I did a year of financial mathematics in Zurich and went skiing almost every week. Nowadays, I have my seasonal pass in Åre and go up there as often as I can. Twelve ski-days so far this winter, and I am going back for more this spring!”
